Jun 10, 2014 • drink and be drunken

this is from way back in 2004 whilst moseying qingdao with my first digital camera (SONY V1).
don't be fooled by the innocuous appearance of these bottles - they contain a drink best avoided but always imposed upon: 'baijiu' 白酒 ("bye joe"), a vile eau-de-vie distilled from sorghum, rice, wheat or whatever grass-like plant happens to be growing near the boiler. this pallet of bottles is merely a partial array of a week's consumption at a local restaurant. come to think of it, this looks more like one night's worth for imbibing customers.

Mar 20, 2014 • the first metro ride

here's a snippet from ottavio's very first ride in the metro. the wonderment looks familiar.. in 1967 my own maiden trip through the montréal underground was with my dad to expo67. the metro was new-fangled in those days and quite a spectacle through the eyes of an 8 year old. the scent of burnt cherry wood (used for the metro's brake shoes) was more pervasive then but whenever i do catch a sniff of it now, it brings back very fond memories of that day.
with the reverie of those shiny racing-striped blue cars still reeling in my head, re-surfacing on île ste helène that morning was a complete sensory overload. it was as if being transported into the future.

a wrapping for italian oranges that was hidden away for years as storage packing material. translation of the label, "the trusted brand of francofonte (sicily) - 'two kittens' extra dark oranges".
