i've had another series of hard drive failures (yes - plural, as in backups of backups) these past few weeks and the outcome has been a tragic loss of innumerable memories and a whole lot of assignments. it seems to be a recurring theme in my life :-(
i've also discovered through this process, besides the fact i'm living in an extremely electro-corrosive environment, that recovery software apps are generally fallacious and over-priced. when they do work it takes days, literally, and there's little to do other than watch your mac's glossy screen in wearisome anticipation. times like these i really, really miss tape and film. in fact i'm seriously considering a move to film as part of a next-generation business plan. chromes and b&w prints are painfully expensive upfront these days but that's pretty much where it ends as a methodology (the clients can take care of reproductions otherwise). and the outcome to me is still much more magical than chimping my nikon's lcd. this digital thing is with us for good but it has become taxing in more ways than i imagined.
anyways, the silver lining, whether dusting off old boxes or spinning glitchy disks, can be a rediscovery of things forgotten. not a highlight by any stretch but in the meantime, here's a jam from a couple of years ago that just popped into the salvage folder. it's a variation of the 'Variation On The Carlos Santana Secret Chord Progression' (f.zappa), featuring a couple of solo extracts from greg and i live at the 'lennonshithole bar' in qingdao. incidentally, 'oye como va' (the secret progression in this example) was in fact composed by tito puente who made a splash of his own with its catchy cha-cha before carlos exposed it to the pepsi generation.

UPDATE: just found out youtube allows HD embeds so i uploaded a version there. youtube's 'HD' isn't quite the same quality as on vimeo or facebook but it is the only one at present that allows higher quality embedding (without a fee).you can view a better version HERE.

i stumbled across this stuff online. sometimes you gotta wonder what else is out there in the wonderful www waiting to embarrass you..
completely forgotten and mostly forgettable, i was invited to jam with this japanese drummer dude named 'funky' (yeah, original isn't it?) at the local tv station during his tour of china. the event was wreaked with the usual - bad sound, lousy gear (notice the bass amp cuts out most of the time) and the most annoying 'famous' drummer i've ever played with, ie: no dynamics and one volume, 11 (you might also notice i had to crank up just to hear myself at the solo get go). ahh, memories.

amazingly, left hand usage is still routinely frowned upon within chinese academic youth circles. this can lead to obvious frustrations for students especially when their parents tend to align with the faculty in this matter (along with the many other 'forbidden deeds' of high school pupils). i met one student who took it all in very well considering the challenges involved in perfecting the strokes of han yu* with your natural hand let alone with the non-dexterous variant. sort of like playing your guitar upside down (think: jimi hendrix) or riding a bicycle with arms crisscrossed on the handlebars.. you get the idea. this mini-clip is my name (马可, ma ke) translated simultaneously in stereo-vision.

ok, so here's the deal - new baby, new camera (and a nerdy blog post). in our case it's a panasonic GF1, a clicker that won't keep my nikons out of business, but most certainly out of my travel/day bag. indeed, virtually all of ottavio's pix thus far have been captured with this machine as well as most of the recent entries (not the clementines though.. micro-nikkor material). shedded pounds of walking gear notwithstanding, it was just about time to move into the age of HD anyways and pretend to be a videographer, like so many other deluded stills guys. hehe, who's kidding who? (though this is awesome fun).
this clip was shot in manual focus @iso 100 with the 'standard' pancake 20mm f1.7 lumix lens - what a sweet little gem of glass this thing is if a tad slow in the AF department. straight outta camera, just converted to .mov from the GF1's kickass AVCHD and uploaded to vimeo - no grading, colouring, editing, etc (like i would know the difference). to watch in HD click HERE.

- on kitty and i's last trip to montréal, we witnessed some very wacky uses for modern technology - not all of them shall we say, ecologically sane. this sample is doing its best to suck up what's left of our environmental conscience.. (notice the gas-guzzling supervisor's pickup truck riding in tandem). ladies and gentlemen, i give you 'the madvac'..

- the NFB's CineRobotheque is an interesting take on the modern-day personal entertainment library, though one might question its somewhat freakish implementation (read: oversized carbon footprint) - a robot cues up your desired disc, then hits 'play' for you.

dang, i missed a very important birthday exactly 2 weeks ago - smokey bear's. not only has this big fuzzy guy been helping save precious wildlife and forests, but he's been doing it for over 64 years. in fact, smokey's been part of the longest-running ad campaign in US history, created in 1944 by the ad council, just two years after their founding (the ad council had its beginnings during WWII as the 'war advertising council'). that smokey has lasted this long is no small feat amongst public service announcement (let alone advertising) circles; let's hope he doesn't retire at 65..
here's a treat; i discovered a copy of a 1969 TV spot for wildfire prevention featuring a young SB at the end. notice the bucolic clear-cut timber logging bit - classic. i guess it was also in the lumber conglomerates' best interest to keep those trees alive..

i recently updated my photo site with a cleaner look and new 'bio'. included in this 'wherefore' is a vintage TV ad for what proved to be the genesis of my photo-affair - the 'secret sam' spy attaché case (or more specifically, the camera hidden inside). i thought the commercial was worth repeating for yuz here..
