i had forgotten gordon parks directed 'shaft'
(see previous entries..).
i first got wind of the man browsing mildewed back issues of life magazine at the family cottage sometime in the
late 60s early 70s. though he's renowned to many as hollywood's first major black director, park's photographs were his greatest works. he had an incredible ability to tell a story in one frame - stories of african-america that were very far removed from a white canadian teenager's lakeside paradise. he also captured celebrities in a unique journalistic style such as in this image of ingrid bergman in italy (still one of my favourites)..
